Job Overview
An academic staff member at UOC is responsible for a range of duties encompassing teaching, student support, administration, research, and professional contributions. Their role involves designing and delivering effective teaching materials, conducting classes and assessments, and contributing to curriculum development. They also mentor students, organize extracurricular activities, and provide administrative support within the university. Academic staff may engage in clinical services if applicable, contribute to societal and professional networks, and actively pursue research activities, including publications and grant acquisition. Ultimately, they work under the guidance of the Dean of Medicine and fulfill additional responsibilities as required by the university.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching responsibilities
- To Undertake teaching and teaching related duties such as design, preparation, and development of teaching materials; conduct classes/lectures, tutorials, and practical/ bed side teaching; consultation with students.
- To invigilate the examination and conduct student assessment.
- To Participate and contribute to high quality assurance program and curriculum development.
- To Plan and implement teaching strategies to optimize student learning as well as to motivate them.
- To Support in evidence-based research project work of undergraduate students
2. Student personality development, student support / supervision
- To be a mentor/ academic supervisor to a group/s of student.
- To be convenor of at least one co / extra-curriculum activities for students
3. Administration / service to UOC
- To undertake and contribute to administrative responsibilities such as attending departmental meetings, participating in committees, and working groups within the Department, Faculty and University.
- To Participate in continuous professional development activities.
- To Assist in establishing linkages with external organizations/ professional bodies in academic related matters.
- To be a course coordinator
- To conduct student Interviews
- To participate in University/faculty Promotional activities like career fair and educational fair
4. Clinical services (Clinical lecturers only)
- To Provide clinical /patient care services as requested by training / Ministry of Health hospital/clinic. (Minimum 4 hours/week)
5. Contribution to society, professional body, corporate etc.
- Contribute to professional consultancy & networking – international & local, as approved by Dean of Medicine
6. Research & self-development
- To participate in scholarly activities, including undertaking research, conference presentation, journal publications and training of peers
- To support efforts to secure grants for research activities and scholarship as co-researcher.
7. Other duties as directed by Dean of Medicine.
Skills and Experiences
- Master Degree or PHD from a recognised university preferably in respective discipline of study
- At least 5 to 10 years experience in teaching at College/University level
- Research and publication proven track record
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage a diverse group of students and colleagues
- Strong leadership and managerial skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Familiarity with MQA and MOHE requirements is an added advantage
